A local court has convicted a person for taking away and sexually molesting a young girl for two months and sentenced him to life imprisonment with fine of Rs 250,000 in Peshawar. The court of additional district and sessions judge Ali Gohar pronounced that the prosecution had proved its case against the accused, Iftikhar Khan, and the evidence on record connected him with the commission of the offence. The accused was awarded life imprisonment under section 376, and five years imprisonment each under section 337 J and 496 A. All the sentences have to run concurrently.
Abuse against children fills our news stream every other day. In the past month alone, there have been at least nine cases of sexual abuse against children reported in local news channels and newspapers. We can be sure that there may be a dozen more that were hidden from the media to avoid the ‘shame’ most family members of the victims dread. Perpetrators should always be punished, only then we will be able to put this heinous crime to a halt.
